A Southern California Photographer’s Guide: When Should You Take Maternity Photos?
If you are expecting a baby, you may be wondering, when should you take maternity photos?
For most expecting mothers, the best time to take maternity photos is between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. During this stage, your baby bump is usually beautifully defined while you may still feel comfortable enough to move, pose, walk, and enjoy your maternity photography session.
However, there is no single perfect week for everyone.
The best time for your maternity photos can depend on whether this is your first pregnancy, whether you are expecting twins or multiples, how you are feeling, your doctor’s recommendations, and the type of maternity session you would like to create.
As a Southern California maternity photographer with a portrait studio in Monrovia, I help expecting mothers plan maternity sessions in the studio, outdoors, and at home. Here is what you should consider when deciding when to schedule your maternity photos.
What Week of Pregnancy Is Best for Maternity Photos?
For most pregnancies, I recommend scheduling your maternity photography session around 28 to 34 weeks.
This tends to be the sweet spot because your belly is visibly round and prominent, which photographs beautifully, but you are not necessarily at the very end of your pregnancy when you may be feeling more tired or uncomfortable.
Every pregnancy is different, though.
Some mothers have a noticeable bump earlier. Others may prefer to wait a little longer.
The goal is not to reach a particular belly size. The goal is to photograph this chapter of motherhood at a time when you feel comfortable and can enjoy the experience.
28 to 30 Weeks
This can be a wonderful time if you want more flexibility with posing and movement.
Your bump will usually be visible, but you may still feel comfortable standing, sitting, walking, and changing outfits.
This timeframe can be especially helpful for outdoor maternity sessions where we may walk around the location to create different photographs.
31 to 34 Weeks
For many expecting mothers, this is an ideal maternity photography window.
Your baby bump is usually beautifully defined, giving us that classic maternity portrait look.
If you are dreaming about photographs that really celebrate the shape of your pregnancy, scheduling within this timeframe can work beautifully.
After 34 Weeks
You can absolutely take maternity photos after 34 weeks.
However, waiting until the final weeks of pregnancy can introduce more uncertainty.
You may experience additional swelling, fatigue, discomfort, or mobility limitations. There is also always the possibility that your baby decides to arrive earlier than expected.
If you are already beyond 34 weeks and have not scheduled your maternity photos, do not assume that you missed your opportunity.
Reach out.
Depending on your pregnancy and availability, we may still be able to create a beautiful maternity session.
When Should You Book Your Maternity Photographer?
The best time to take maternity photos and the best time to book your maternity photographer are two different things.
You do not need to wait until you are 28 weeks pregnant to start looking for a photographer.
I recommend reaching out during your second trimester, or earlier if you already know you want maternity portraits.
Booking ahead gives you more choices for dates and allows us time to plan your session without rushing.
This is especially important if you want an outdoor maternity session during a particular season or if your ideal session date falls during a busy photography season.
Once your session is reserved, we can start thinking about your location, wardrobe, overall style, and whether you would like your partner or children included.
When Should You Take Maternity Photos With Twins?
If you are expecting twins or multiples, you may want to schedule your maternity session earlier.
A maternity photography session around 24 to 30 weeks may be more comfortable for some mothers expecting multiples.
Your bump may become prominent earlier, and waiting until later in pregnancy may make a full photography session more physically demanding.
Your comfort and health should always come first, so talk with your medical provider about what is appropriate for your pregnancy.
We can then plan the photography session around what works best for you.
Is 30 Weeks a Good Time for Maternity Photos?
Yes.
Around 30 weeks pregnant is one of my favorite times for maternity photography.
Your belly will typically have a beautiful shape while still giving us flexibility to create a variety of poses and looks.
At 30 weeks, we can potentially incorporate standing portraits, seated portraits, movement, photographs with your partner, and different outfits without making the session feel overly demanding.
Of course, every pregnancy feels different, so your comfort matters more than reaching exactly 30 weeks.
Is 36 Weeks Too Late for Maternity Pictures?
Not necessarily.
You can still take beautiful maternity photographs at 36 weeks.
If you are feeling good and your doctor has not given you restrictions, we can adapt your maternity session to keep you comfortable.
For a later maternity session, you might prefer a studio environment where we can control the temperature, lighting, seating, and overall pace.
The main disadvantage of waiting until 36 weeks or later is simply that there is less flexibility if your baby arrives early or you no longer feel comfortable having photographs taken.
That is why I generally recommend planning earlier when possible.
Should You Choose Studio or Outdoor Maternity Photos?
The best maternity session location depends on the experience and final photographs you want.
Southern California gives us the advantage of having both beautiful outdoor locations and studio photography available throughout much of the year.
Studio Maternity Photography
My Monrovia portrait studio is a wonderful option for expecting mothers who want maternity photographs that feel modern, polished, intimate, and timeless.
A studio session gives us complete control over lighting.
It also gives you privacy for wardrobe changes and allows us to create photographs where the focus is completely on you and your pregnancy.
Studio maternity photography can range from simple and elegant portraits to more dramatic editorial inspired images.
It is also a great option when Southern California weather is extremely hot, rainy, windy, or simply unpredictable.
Outdoor Maternity Photography
An outdoor maternity session can be beautiful if you love natural light, movement, scenery, and a softer lifestyle feeling.
Southern California offers many different environments, from greenery and gardens to beaches, architecture, open landscapes, and mountain views.
Outdoor maternity photography can also give your partner or children room to interact naturally with you.
The season and sunset time will play an important role in deciding when your outdoor session begins.
What Time of Day Is Best for Outdoor Maternity Photos?
For outdoor maternity photography, the best light is often during the period before sunset.
The exact time changes throughout the year.
Instead of choosing your session time based solely on what is most convenient on the clock, I recommend planning around the quality of the light at your selected location.
Southern California summer evenings may allow us to photograph later in the day, while winter sessions generally need to begin earlier because the sun sets sooner.
Location matters too.
Mountains, buildings, trees, and other surroundings can cause a location to lose its best light well before the official sunset.
That is one reason working with your photographer to select both the location and time can make such a difference.
What Season Is Best for Maternity Photos in Southern California?
One advantage of planning maternity photos in Southern California is that we can photograph outdoors during much of the year.
Each season creates a different look.
Spring Maternity Photos
Spring can bring greenery, wildflowers, softer temperatures, and beautiful natural scenery.
This is a lovely season if you envision romantic outdoor maternity portraits surrounded by nature.
Summer Maternity Photos
Summer gives us long evenings and beautiful warm light, but temperatures can become uncomfortable depending on the location.
For summer maternity photography, I may recommend an evening session or an indoor studio session depending on the weather.
Fall Maternity Photos
Fall can bring warmer tones and softer evening light.
It is also a popular season for family photography, so reserving your maternity photographer in advance is especially important.
Winter Maternity Photos
Southern California winters can still provide beautiful outdoor photography days.
The sun sets earlier, so maternity sessions need to be planned accordingly.
A Monrovia studio maternity session is also a great winter option because we do not have to worry about rain or chilly temperatures.
What Should You Wear for Maternity Photos?
Your maternity wardrobe should complement your body rather than hide it.
Fitted dresses can beautifully emphasize the shape of your baby bump, while flowing dresses can add softness and movement.
Neutral colors such as cream, white, beige, brown, and black can create a timeless look. Richer colors can also photograph beautifully depending on your skin tone, location, and desired style.
You can also create variety by incorporating more than one look into your maternity session.
For example, you may want one elegant dress and one simpler, more intimate look.
Your wardrobe should ultimately feel like you.
Before your session, we can talk about the overall look you want to create so your clothing, location, and photography style all work together.
Should Your Partner Be in Your Maternity Photos?
Absolutely, if you want them included.
Maternity photography celebrates your pregnancy, but it can also document the anticipation you are experiencing together.
We can create portraits focused entirely on you as well as photographs with your partner.
Those interactions often create some of the most meaningful images from a maternity session.
Holding your belly together, laughing, embracing, and simply taking a moment to recognize that your family is about to change can all become part of your maternity story.
Should You Bring Your Children to a Maternity Session?
If this is not your first baby, including your children can be a beautiful way to document your family before your newest member arrives.
We can photograph your children interacting with your belly, cuddling with you, and spending time together as a family.
I also recommend creating some maternity portraits of you alone.
This gives you a complete gallery that celebrates both your pregnancy and your family’s transition into its next chapter.
What If You Do Not Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera?
You do not need modeling experience to have beautiful maternity photographs.
You also do not need to know how to pose.
That is part of my job as your photographer.
I will guide you through flattering positions for your hands, shoulders, legs, and body while making adjustments based on your comfort.
Small changes in posture, hand placement, camera angle, and lighting can completely transform a maternity portrait.
The goal is not to make you perform for the camera.
It is to create an environment where you can feel comfortable while I guide you through the process.
How Do You Prepare for a Maternity Photo Session?
Start by giving yourself enough time.
Book your photographer before your ideal photography window whenever possible.
Then think about what you want your photographs to feel like.
Do you envision something modern and minimal?
Soft and romantic?
Natural and outdoors?
Elegant and editorial?
Do you want your maternity portraits to focus primarily on you, or would you also like your partner and children involved?
Once we establish the overall direction, we can choose a location and wardrobe that support that vision.
Before the session, give yourself time to get ready without rushing. Eat beforehand, stay hydrated, and bring comfortable shoes if your maternity session involves walking outdoors.
Most importantly, do not put pressure on yourself to look or feel a particular way.
Pregnancy is different for every mother.
Your maternity photographs should celebrate your experience.
Are Maternity Photos Worth It?
Pregnancy can feel long while you are experiencing it, but it represents such a short chapter in the story of your family.
Once your baby arrives, life changes quickly.
Your maternity portraits become a record of the months when you were waiting to meet the person who would soon become such an important part of your life.
They are photographs for you, but someday they can also become photographs for your child.
They will be able to see you carrying them.
They will see how you looked while waiting for them.
And they will have a visual piece of their own story from before they were born.
That is what makes maternity photography meaningful beyond simply having beautiful portraits.
When Should You Take Maternity Photos? The Simple Answer
For most expecting mothers, 28 to 34 weeks is the best time to take maternity photos.
If you are expecting twins or multiples, consider planning your session earlier, often around 24 to 30 weeks.
If you are already further along, you have not necessarily missed your opportunity. Contact your photographer as soon as possible and discuss what will be most comfortable and appropriate for you.
Most importantly, do not wait until your ideal photography week to start searching for a maternity photographer.
Booking during your second trimester gives you more time to plan a session that truly reflects the way you want to remember your pregnancy.
